WMBL Division Finals Game 2
Game 2: Edmonton at Medicine Hat
(Series tied 1-1)
Edmonton starter Erik Sabrowski continued his dominance of WMBL hitters as he tossed a three-hit shutout in the Prospects 9-0 win over Medicine Hat. Sabrowski, the freshman from Cisco Community College, has made two impressive starts in the 2017 playoffs, winning both games while not giving up an earned run.
Medicine Hat sent Tyler Skinner to the mound in Game 2. He had a rough outing facing 23 batters over four innings. Edmonton scored seven runs on nine hits and two walks against Skinner. The Maverick bullpen finished the game giving up six hits and two runs over five innings.
Nick Spillman led the Prospects with four hits, two RBI and a run. Edmonton leadoff hitter Jake Lanferman, now batting .407 in the playoffs, had two hits, two walks and scored three runs.
For Medicine, Hat Cleveland Tennessee native Chris Caffery had one of the Mavericks three hits.
With the best of five series now tied 1-1, the teams will travel to Edmonton for Game 3 Wednesday night and Game 4 Thursday night. Game 5 will be back in Medicine Hat Friday night if needed.
Game 2: Weyburn 6 at Swift Current 0
(Weyburn leads the series 2-0)
A five run second inning was all Weyburn needed to grab a 2-0 series lead over the Swift Current 57’s. The Beavers added an insurance run in the sixth to make the final score 6-0.
It was a total team effort for the Weyburn Beavers as all nine hitters reached base. Luis Jimenez, Ulysses Fluellen and Cam Williams all chipped in with two hits each in the Beavers fourth consecutive playoff road victory.
Outfielder Blake Adams had a pair of hits for Swift Current.
Weyburn started Winnipeg native Ryan Johnson and he provided a quality outing going six shutout innings giving up just five hits. John picked up the victory with a little help from his bullpen friends, Beau Rabedeaux, Cody Pamperin and Eric Evans shut out the 57’s hitters over the final three innings.
Dustin Wells got the nod to start for the 57’s but lasted just 1.2 innings in the loss. The senior
from George Fox University was tagged for five unearned runs on five hits and a walk before giving way to the Swift Current bullpen.
The series now shifts to Tom Laing Park in Weyburn for Game 3 Wednesday night and Game 4, if necessary, on Thursday night.
