A busy week ended on a losing note for the Moose Jaw Miller Express on Sunday.
The Millers went into Swift Current and fell 10-3 to the Indians during an afternoon game in the Western Major Baseball League.
Moose Jaw managed just five hits in the game and were held without a hit for the final four innings as the Indians shut them down offensively.
Starting pitcher Ragan Cole took the loss for Moose Jaw on the mound, allowing seven runs — six earned — on eight hits over five innings of work. Cole struck out one and walked two as he made his first start of the season.
Kobe Portillo and Mark Baughman finished the game for Moose Jaw, allowing three more runs on four combined hits over the final three innings.
After falling behind 3-0 after the first inning, the Millers’ offence came to life in the third with a lead-off home run by right fielder Dylan Blaha.
Moose Jaw added another run in the fourth inning on an RBI-single by Jackson Schnurbusch to make cut the Indians’ lead to 3-2. Swift Current restored their two-run lead in the bottom half of the fourth when Alex Schultz smacked a lead-off home run.
The Millers answered right back when Shoma Sasaki scored on an RBI-double from Louis Boyd to make it 4-3 head into the bottom of the fifth, but Swift Current were able to respond again with another run to go back up by two.
The Indians put some separation between them and the Millers in the sixth when Kyle MacDonald hit a three-run shot to make it 8-3.
Swift Current tacked on two more runs in the eighth to seal the win.
Moose Jaw drops to 12-22 with the loss and currently sit five games back of the Weyburn Beavers for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Division.
The Millers return to the field on Wednesday when they host the Indians for a rematch at Ross Wells Park. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
