Another week has passed in the WMBL and we are one week closer to the 2016 WMBL playoffs. In both divisions the race for the top spot is getting tighter by the day. As of writing this article the Medicine Hat Mavericks lead Okotoks by 3 games in the West, and Swift Current holds a 3.5 game lead over Regina in the East. With around 15 games left to be played this season there could still be a lot of movement in the standings. The Okotoks Dawgs are the hotest team in the league with an 8-2 record over their last 10 games, and 5 straight wins.
The triple crown category leaders in the WMBL are also some tightly contested races as we head towards the end of the regular season. Mitch McGeein from the Lethbridge Bulls is tops in the league with a .440 average followed by Cory Scammell from Edmonton (.397) and Alec Humphreys from Swift Current (.387). Alex Alders from Medicine Hat holds firm leads in both homeruns and RBI's with 9 and 47 respectively. On the other side of the ball Kody Rock from Yorkton owns top spot in two of the three pitching triple crown categories. Rock bosts a 1.41 ERA and 48 strikeouts, but there are a handful of pitchers hot on his heels in both categories. It will sureley be interesting to see who can push through and finish the 2016 WMBL season on top.
As previously stated there will be one winner of player of the week. That player will be recognized on the main page of the website. If the player of the week is a hitter, a pitcher of the week is awarded, and if the player of the week is a pitcher, a hitter of the week will be awarded. The cutoff for games will be on Sunday. A new week will start every Monday.
Week # 5 (July 4 - July 10th)
Player of the Week – Kody Rock – Yorkton Cardinals – RHP
Kody Rock from the Yorkton Cardinals has been arguably the most consistent pitcher in the WMBL this season, and last week was no different. Rock took the mound against the Brooks Bombers on July 7th and spun a gem for his Cardinals who are fighting to hold on to the 3rd spot in the East division. The Canora, Saskatchewan native threw his 3rd complete game of the season, and second shutout leading the Cards to a 7-0 victory. Rock's line in the game looked like this: W, 9.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 0 BB, 12 K. Rock faced 30 batters on the night, only 3 over the minimum. For the season rock has a 4-2 record, a 1.41 ERA, 48 SO in 51 innings pitched. Congratulations to Kody Rock on being named WMBL Player of the Week.
Hitter of the Week – Bodie Cooper – Swift Current Indians – C
Bodie Cooper of the Swift Current Indians was a pretty straight forward choice for hitter of the week. The 6'2" catcher from Chubbuck, Idaho led the Indians to a 4-2 week recording hits in all but one of the Indians 6 games on the week. In four of those games Cooper had multi hit nights. For the week Cooper's stat line looked like this: 6 G, .478 AVG (11-23), .556 OBP, 1.643 OPS, 8 R, 3 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 11 RBI, 3 BB, 1 HBP. Cooper attended Wayne State College this past season where he hit .276 with 11 HR, and a team leading 39 RBI's. Congratulations to Bodie Cooper on being named WMBL Hitter of the Week.
