It was a fantastic week for WMBL fans especially over the Canada Day weekend. Fans from across Alberta and Saskatchewan packed WMBL stadiums on the 1st and the baseball was intense as always. Some of the attendance numbers were staggering. See below:
At the time of writing this article the WMBL attendance is over 135,000 fans for the season. Last season the WMBL drew 172, 737 fans to ballparks across the two provinces. It looks like the WMBL should blow past last years mark. Obviously adding two teams to the league has helped attendance, but the numbers so far are encouraging to say the least. With around 20 games left for each team there is no reason we shouldn’t be able to push past the 200k mark for 2016. The WMBL would like to thank everyone who came out and supported on Canada Day, and to your continued support through the remainder of the season and playoffs!
We are now over halfway through the season and the Medicine Hat Mavericks remain the team to beat in the WMBL. The Mavs now sit with a 22-4 record. The Mavs pushed their winning streak to 10 games before suffering a defeat to the Brooks Bombers over the weekend. The Okotoks Dawgs are the closest in pursuit sitting 5 games back of Medicine Hat.
In the East Division the Swift Current Indians remain on top as they have been all season. The Indians are at 20-7 followed by the Regina Red Sox (16-9) and the Yorkton Cardinals (13-13).
With an equal number of teams in each division the playoffs will run a little bit more smoothly this season. The top 4 teams in each division will clinch a berth into the playoff rounds. The top seed in each division will play the 4 seed, and 2 vs. 3 will face off. The winners of the first round series in each division will play for the division title, and a chance at the WMBL championship in the middle of August. If the playoffs were to start today the matchups would look like this:
1.Medicine Hat Mavericks Vs. 4. Edmonton Prospects
2.Okotoks Dawgs Vs. 3. Lethbridge Bulls
1.Swift Current Indians Vs. 4. Weyburn Beavers
2.Regina Red Sox Vs. 3. Yorkton Cardinals
There is still plenty of baseball to be played, and lots can change in that time. It is sure to be an exciting finish to the season. Make sure to come out and support your local team as the playoff push begins!
