Wednesday night will be a historic night for the WMBL. The first ever game played at Shell Place will take place when the Fort McMurray Giants host the Regina Red Sox. Game time will be 5:05pm.
As we all know from across Canada, Fort McMurray was devastated earlier this year by a wild fire. The Giants have been playing their home games at Telus Field in Edmonton while Fort McMurray is working to get the city back up and running. On Wednesday night Fort McMurray residents will have a chance to see their hometown WMBL team play for the first time.
The Regina Red Sox GM Bernie Eiswirth had this to say about the historic night. “It is very exciting to be part of this historic first game at Shell Place. I know the Giants fans are going to fill the park and make this an electrifying home opener for their team.”
Fort McMurray GM Dutche Ianetti had this to say about his team’s first games at home. “I am more than excited to be able to play our first games of the year in Fort McMurray Wednesday night. It is going to be a great night for all of the players, staff, fans and family members involved.”
After Wednesday nights game a fundraising concert will be held in Edmonton at Commonwealth Stadium. The concert will be live streamed at Shell Place for all on hand at the game. Nickleback is headlining the concert. They will take the stage 10:00pm. To view the entire set list please click here.
It should be an incredible night for the WMBL, the city of Fort McMurray and all of Alberta. If you can please come out and support the Fort McMurray Giants at home for the first time this season!
