After getting rained out in Medicine Hat on Tuesday the Mavs and the Prospects got game 5 in their West Division Final underway last night, and the game did not disappoint. After trailing early the Edmonton Prospects fought back with 3 runs in the middle innings to take a 4-3 lead after 7 complete. Noah Gapp, Edmonton’s standout starting pitcher thus far in the playoffs picked up the 2 inning save to punch a ticket to the 2016 WMBL Finals. It was an incredible series that came down to the wire, and the Prospects battled the whole way. With that win the Prospects earn a showdown with the East Division Champion, Swift Current Indians who have yet to drop a game in the playoffs.
Two-way player Erik Sabrowski started on the mound for the Prospects. As has been the case all post-season, Sabrowski was very good over his 7 innings of work. All told he threw 7.0 innings, giving up 9 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB and 6 SO. For the playoffs Sabrowski boasts a 0.91 ERA over 19.2 innings pitched with 16 SO. Add in the fact that Sabrowski is hitting .500 in 30 at bats so far this playoffs, and it is clear to see he is one of the main reasons that Edmonton will play for a championship starting this evening. Opposing Sabrowski on the mound was Medicine Hat ace, Jared Libke. Libke who had been dominant in his two outings in the playoffs put up a similar performance on Wednesday night. Libke threw 8.0 innings allowing 4 runs, 1 of which was earned. A defense that had been so solid all year had two costly errors on Wednesday night leading to 3 unearned runs. Even in defeat, Libke’s playoff performance was outstanding: 2-1, 26.0 IP, 0.69 ERA, 22 SO, 4 BB, 16 H.
On the other side of the ball Kody Funderbunk hit his 3rd homerun of the series in the 7th inning to give the Prospects the 4-3 lead they would not let slip away. Funderbunk hit .368 for the series with 3 homeruns and 8 RBI’s to lead his team to victory. Edmonton will need to find ways to keep their offense working against Swift Current who has put up over 50 runs so far this post-season.
Game 1 of the Championship Series will start tonight at Mitchell Field in Swift Current. Game time is 7:05pm. Good luck to both teams!
