WMBL Game Recaps - Thursday, July 26

Doubleheader

Game 1

Regina 3 at Yorkton 0 (10 innings)

The Regina Red Sox needed 10 innings to score a 3-0 victory over the Yorkton Cardinals at Jubilee Park. The highlight of the night was that both starting pitchers, Regina’s Brian Raymond and Yorkton’s Parker Hubbard, pitched nine shutout innings before tossing the ball to the bullpen.  

 

Raymond ended up the winning pitcher with Adam De la Cruz picking up the save. Matt Zanutto was tagged with the loss. 

 

The winning Red Sox run came off the bat of catcher Antonio Torres whose single in the bottom of the 10thinning scored Brooks Stotler. The visitors added two insurance runs later in the inning when Erik Crossman’s two out single plated Wesley Moss and Danny Hunt.

Wesley Moss stole his 28thbase

Sox pitchers struck out 12 Cardinal batters

 

Highlights - Yorkton

Griffey Halle went 3 for 5 with a stolen base

Parker Hubbard only allowed 4 hits and 1 walk plus he struck out 4 batters

 

Game 2 

Regina 1 at Yorkton 10           

Yorkton extracted some revenge for game 1 by crushing Regina 10-1 in seven innings. Regina was held to just four hits while the Cardinals belted out nine hits. 

 

Yorkton chased Red Sox starter Pat Machibroda in the first inning when the Cards scored eight runs.  Andrew Cisneros pitched a complete seven innings for the victory. 

 

Cardinal shortstop Logan MacDougall had a hot bat in the second game registering three hits, three RBI and two runs scored. 

 

Highlights - Regina

Wesley Moss hit his fourth double

Three Regina batters got on base after being hit by a pitch

 

Highlights - Yorkton

Griffey Halle had 3 RBI 

Andrew Cisneros threw 82 pitches, 60 for strikes 

 

 

Moose Jaw 0 at Weyburn 9

Weyburns’ Reid Wall struck out 14 Moose Jaw batters on his way to complete game two hit shutout. With the 9-0 thumping of the Miller Express the Eastern Division leading Beavers improved to 35-10 on the season. Moose Jaw slipped to 21-24. 

 

Wade Weinburger was the Beavers offensive leader with a home run, three runs scored and  four RBI. Felix Correa also added three hits and a walk for Weyburn.

 

With the complete game victory Wall earned his fourth win of the year while Markus Gregson took the Moose Jaw loss.

Geordie McDougall and Mitchell Robinson had the Moose Jaw hits

Blake Gallagher is batting .308

 

Highlights - Weyburn

310 fans were at Tom Laing Park

Corey Harrell had 2 hits, a double 3 RBI and a walk

 

 

Edmonton 6 at Lethbridge 3

With third place in the Western Division still up for grabs the visiting Edmonton Prospects doubled up the Lethbridge Bulls 6-3 at Spitz Stadium.

 

849 fans looked on as Edmonton jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. Edmonton then held off the Bulls bats in the bottom of the ninth as Lethbridge rallied for three runs. 

 

Prospects shortstop Zane Takhar had a solid night at the plate contributing two hits, a walk, a RBI and scored two runs in the win. Kaleb Warden had two hits for the Bulls. 

Edmonton is 20-23 and hold a slim third place lead on the 19-26 Bulls. 

 

Highlights - Edmonton

Five Prospect batters had 2 hits

Josh Sieglitz picked up the win with Chase Morris adding the save 

 

Highlights - Lethbridge

Blake MacDonald had a double, a walk and two RBI

Kaleb Warden is batting .379 and Jake Semeniuk is hitting .380

 

 

Swift Current 8 at Melville 0

Swift Current starter Joey Machado threw seven scoreless innings as the 57’s blanked Melville 8-0. 

 

Outfielder Nick Canas lead the Swift Current offensive attack with two hits, two walks and three runs. Blake Adams reached base twice on hit by pitches to run his season total to 15. 

Melville catcher Lyle Hibbits got on base twice in the game on a hit and a walk. 

 

Highlights - Swift Current

Ben Komonosky: 2 hits, a walk, a RBI and a run 

Starter Joey Machado had 10 strikeouts

 

Highlights - Melville

Zach Diaz tossed one scoreless inning in relief

Outfielder Ryan Tackett is hitting .311

 

 

Brooks 8 at Fort McMurray 5 (10 innings)

The Brooks Bombers scored four runs in the 10thinning to break a 4-4 tie and defeat their Alberta rival Fort McMurray 8-5. 

 

Johnny Chavez earned the win for the Bombers, who improved to 13-32. David Craft was the Giants pitcher of record. Fort McMurray’s record now sits at 16-29.  

 

Lane Fleming, the product of McPherson College, had two doubles and two runs in the Bomber win. Drew Dickerson countered with three hits and a RBI of his own for Fort McMurray. 

 

Highlights - Brooks

Damian Rodriguez smacked his 8thhomer and has 25 RBI  in 2018

Bombers had 3 doubles and 1 home run and left 7 runners on base

 

Highlights - Fort McMurray

Zachary Koroneos got his 1sthome run of the season

Drew Dickerson stole 2 bases
