The ground might be covered with snow right now, but summer is on its way and that means another season of Moose Jaw Miller Express baseball is just around the corner.

The team is in the recruiting process right now as they look to finalize their roster for the 2018 Western Major Baseball League season.

"We've done a pretty good job, especially in the last couple of weeks, of filling in the holes that we've had, we haven't had a lot of people back out or get injured throughout the year, which is always a good thing because the kids that you wanted and signed early, you end up keeping them for the long haul," said Millers head coach Michael Hunt.

The college baseball season is well underway down in the United States, which means that players that will be making up the Miller Express roster this season are hitting the field around the country.

That brings with it the risk of injury, but Hunt said that they've been in the clear so far this season and have pretty much their entire roster in place.

"As it stands right now, knock on wood that everybody gets here, it will be an older team," said Hunt. "We've got more than our usual number of seniors, unfortunately not as many as returning guys, we had a couple of players who coaches wanted them to stay at school, so quite a few juniors, more than our normal number of seniors, so we should be quite a bit older this year than in years past."

The recruiting process can be a challenge as players may commit early and then change their mind as their collegiate season moves on, Hunt said that can happen more with senior players who want to move onto the next stage of their lives.

"Those are the things that you can't control and you just have to roll with it and hope that they get here and hope that everybody that says they want to be here, gets here," said Hunt.

The Millers finished 23-25 last season and lost out in the first round of the WMBL Playoffs to the Swift Current 57s.

With an older team coming to Ross Wells Park this season, Hunt said that there is some excitement heading into the year.

"Every year you look back and you go, 'Okay, this is what did work and this is what didn't work,' but offensively, defensively and pitching, we're pretty well rounded, not one of them is going to be our strength, which is a good thing, if we can have all three things help each other out, it's a good place to start," said Hunt.

The extend winter snap makes it seem like summer will never arrive. Hunt said they're getting anxious to start getting to work at the ballpark.

"Every time we get a taste of spring it seems like it gets snapped back up, so the sooner it can get warm and we can start getting that field ready, it will definitely ramp up and start to feel like summer time," said Hunt.

The Miller Express’ schedule will be released in the coming weeks.
