WMBL Championship Final – Game 3
Swift Current 5 at Edmonton 6
(Edmonton Leads the Series 2-1)
The Edmonton Prospects held off a late inning Swift Current surge to take a step closer to winning their first WMBL championship with a 6-5 victory over the 57’s. The Prospects now lead the best of five Championship series 2-1.
Edmonton opened the scoring in the home half of the fourth inning when Anthony Olson singled to score Erik Sabrowski from third base.
The Prospects added a single run in the six then Swift Current got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh when Nick Canas ran home on a wild pitch.
With 2,838 fans in the stands at ReMax Field, Edmonton increased their lead to 6-1 with a four-run outburst in their half of the seventh inning. The 57’s added one more in the eighth and three in the top of the ninth to make the final 6-5 for Edmonton.
Mitch Guiberson came into the game with two of Swift Current’s playoff wins. In his third playoff start, the freshman from the Community College of Spokane, was chased from the game after 6.1 innings. Guiberson was tagged for six runs on 10 hits and a walk. Aidan Goodall was first up from the 57’s bullpen followed by Fernando Pena who finished the game.
Edmonton’s Australian born Michael Gahan had a stellar outing in his first playoff start for the Prospects. The Montana State University junior, who tossed eight innings for the victory, was charged with four runs on three hits and four walks. Scott Gillespie faced four batters in the ninth before handing the ball to closer Andrew Mirasty for the final two outs.
Swift Current scored their five runs on just three hits and four walks in the game. Nick Canas had a hit and scored two runs for the 57’s.
Erik Sabrowski had a good night at the dish for the Prospects. He produced three hits and two RBI to power the Edmonton offence. Zane Takhar from Victoria, BC added two hits and two runs in the victory.
Game four in the Championship final goes Wednesday night at ReMax Field in Edmonton. Game time is set for 7 pm.
