WMBL Opening Day Recap – May 31

Lethbridge 1 at Edmonton 7

Tony Olson’s had a triple, a homerun and five RBI in the Edmonton Prospects 7-1 win over Lethbridge. 1,668 fans at ReMax Field watched as the Prospects chalked up a four run 4th inning and then added three more unanswered runs in 7th to complete the scoring.

Liam Vulcano had two of Lethbridge’s three hits on the night. Ben Erwin threw five innings in a losing effort. Edmonton used five pitchers with Brenden Wiun earning the victory.

Weyburn 4 at Swift Current 3
Weyburn shortstop Eric Morales’ singled home Keaton Greenwalt in the eighth inning to give the Beavers a 4-3 victory over the WMBL defending champions.  Corey Wheaton also had two hits for Weyburn.

Starter Cam Williams threw eight solid innings for the Beavers allowing two earned runs on seven hits and four strikeouts.

Tommy Steier, one of four Swift Current pitchers, took the loss. WMBL rookie Dauson Tate, from Dodge Community College, had two hits and a run for the 57s.

Yorkton 3 at Moose Jaw 9
The Moose Jaw Miller Express scored eight runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the visiting Yorkton Cardinals 9-3 in opening night action at Ross Wells Park.

Starter Mitchell Robinson earned the win for Moose Jaw while Austin Skelhorn was tagged with the loss for Yorkton.  Cardinal outfielder Ryne Niemi was a bright spot at the plate for the visitors. The Adams State product had three hits and three RBI on the night. 

Moose Jaw was powered by the bat of Alex Hendra-Brown who had four hits, three RBI and scored a run. Announced attendance was 401.
