2018 Eastern Division Preview

The WMBL’s Eastern Division looks to be very competitive in 2018. All six teams had off-season success in adding new talented recruits to their lineups. The playoff race should go down to the wire again this year. 

 

Swift Current 57s
Head Coach Joe Carnahan will have just one returning player from the 2017 WMBL championship team. Pitcher Mitch Guiberson is the lone veteran hold over and will anchor the 57s 2018 pitching staff. With a solid recruiting class watch for Coach Carnahan’s charges to challenge for another league title.

2017 Regular Season: Finished first in the Eastern Division with a 33-15 overall record.

2017 Playoffs: Won the 2017 WMBL Championship

Player to Watch

Mitch Guiberson
* 3.22 ERA in 4 regular season appearances
* Tossed 22.1 innings and had 11 strikeouts
* Made three playoff starts with a 2-1 record and a 3.09 ERA.

 

Weyburn Beavers
WMBL Coach of the Year Phil Curtis is back to manage the Weyburn Beavers. Last season he led his team to an impressive second-place Eastern Division finish which included a strong 8-2 record to end the regular season. Cam Williams returns to the Beaver lineup after a sensational season with the University of Calgary.

2017 Regular Season:  Their 30-18 record which was good enough for second place finish.

2017 Playoffs: Lost to Swift Current in the Eastern Division Final

* University of Calgary all-time hits leader with 196 and all-time RBI leader with 105
* Had .263 batting average last season with Beavers
* Contributed 5 doubles and 22 RBI in 152 at bats


 

Regina Red Sox
The Regina Red Sox, who have four returning WMBL veterans, are looking to improve on last season’s third place finish. Head Coach Mitch MacDonald will turn to pitcher Jordan Scott and catcher Antonio Torres to led the Red Sox pitching staff. Outfielder Griffin Keller and infielder Phil Langlois are being counted on to anchor the Red Sox defence.
 
2017 Regular Season: Finished third in the Eastern Division with a 29-19.
2017 Playoffs: Lost to Weyburn in the Eastern Division Semi-final

Jordan Scott
* 58.1 inning in 9 starts
* 50 strikeouts and 20 walk
* Had 3 wins and a 4.01 ERA

Antonio Torres
* 80 at bats in 24 games
* 24 runs scored on 27 hits including 7 doubles
* Had a .338 batting average.

 

Moose Jaw Miller Express
Head Coach Michael Hunt and the Moose Jaw Miller Express will have five players returning from last year’s team. Adam Cook, Scott Platt, Travis Edgar, Jesse Marks, and Mitchell Robinson will be the key components in the Miller Express run at the Eastern Division pennant.

2017 Regular Season: Their 23-25 record was good for a fourth-place finish.
2017 Playoffs: Lost to Swift Current in the Eastern Division Semi-final

Scott Platt
* In 46 games had 6 doubles and 16 RBI
* Had a .276 batting average
* Stole 8 bases

Mitchell Robinson
* Started 8 games
* Pitched in 50 innings and had 38 strikeouts and 10 walks
* Finished the season with a 2.88 ERA

 

Melville Millionaires
The Melville Millionaires will lean on returning veterans Andrew Astalos and Jaxsen Davis to provide on field leadership in 2018. After a solid offseason of recruiting by head coach Wes Hunt and his staff, the Millionaires will look to return to the playoffs.

2017 Regular Season: Missed the playoffs and earned a fifth-place finish with a 16-32 record

* Finished with 2-1 record
* Recorded 6 strikeouts

Jaxsen Davis
* 26 games with 37 at bats
* Scored 5 runs on 5 hits and 6 walks
* Had 2 stolen bases and 4 RBI

 

Yorkton Cardinals
With a revamped roster, Cardinal bench boss Johnny Farrington will improve on their 10 wins from last year. Local pitching prospect Tyler Black returns to the Cardinals and will be a key member of the Yorkton pitching staff.

2017 Regular Season Finish: Finished in last place with a 10-38 record.
