Okotoks, AB... The Dawgs (23-8) were down early due to their defense and had a big hill to climb versus their division rivals the Medicine Hat Mavericks (28-6). Apparently nothing is too much for the Dawgs, as they came back from a 5-2 deficit in the sixth inning to win 6-5 in 14 innings.
These last two days have shown that it is always a battle when these two teams face off, as they went into extras for the second straight day. The pitching was dominating all night with Aaron Conyers getting the start and pitching really well; considering all the errors behind him. Codi Scanlon took over from the fifth inning and pitched four innings, striking out seven while keeping the Dawgs in the game to make their comeback. Shawn Andersen and Cody Artalejo were also key in the win giving up no runs in 5 and 2/3 innings.
While the offense was quiet early, it came alive when Cade Gotta smoked a RBI triple and scored on an error in the fifth inning. After that the offense came together, lead by Jerod Bartnik, who went 3-for-6 on the afternoon. Thomas Rodrigues continued to be clutch for the Dawgs, getting the game tying hit in the ninth. Then in the 14th, Sean Kettering came through with a sacrifice fly to score James Stewart to record the team’s fourth walk off win of the season.
The Dawgs and Mavericks will be back in action tomorrow in Medicine Hat to continue their battle for first place and best record in the WMBL.
