WMBL Playoffs Game 1 Recaps - Tuesday, July 31


Eastern Division
Game 1

Moose Jaw 3 at Weyburn 10

Weyburn used an eight run sixth inning to roll by the Moose Jaw Miller Express 10-3.

Weyburn designated hitter Drake Pilat played a huge role for the Beavers as he hit a home run and drove in three runs. The Weyburn offence also got doubles from Felix Correa, Keaton Greenwalt and Nolan Machibroda.

Eric Marriott and Blake Gallagher contributed two hits each for Moose Jaw. Catcher Ty Barclay  scored two of the three Miller Express runs. 

Moose Jaw starter Mitchell Robinson took the loss after throwing five innings.
Ryan Johnson, Weyburn’s starter, was lifted after five innings. Robinson gave way to Dalton Ross who got the win after facing seven Moose Jaw batters over two innings.

Game 1
Regina 9 at Swift Current 6

Adam De La Cruz produced four hits including a home run and scored four runs to push Regina past Swift Current 9-6 in the first game of their best of five playoff series.

In addition to De La Cruz’s solo home run in the top of the fourth inning, Regina got dingers from Matt DeNeau and outfielder Brooks Stotler.

Keil Krumwiede led Swift Current with a pair of hits and two runs scored.

Regina sent Evan Rogers to the hill to begin the game. After 6.2 innings Rogers turned the ball over to reliever Anthony Race. The Arkansas Tech junior only allowed a walk over the final 2.1 innings to pick up the win.

Evan Pontley started for Swift Current and gave way to the 57s bullpen after five complete innings. Jack Ferguson came on in relief and was responsible for the loss.

Jahshua Jones had 2 hits, a run and a RBI

Western Division Playoffs
Game 1
Medicine Hat 5 at Lethbridge 2

The Medicine Hat Mavericks defeated the Lethbridge Bulls 5-2 at Athletic Park. 1,120 fans were on hand to watch Medicine Hat centre fielder David Salgueiro smack a double and a home run to help the Mavericks take game one.

Offensively Lethbridge, who left eight runners on base, got home runs from Jesse Hilyard and Dustin Braun

Andrew Grieder, the Lethbridge starter, lasted four innings and took the loss.
Alex Dafoe started for Medicine Hat and picked up the win allowing just two runs and seven hits over six innings. Barrie Caine and Tyler Shumpert, who earned the save, blanked Lethbridge over the final three innings.

Alex Dafoe threw 101 pitches - 65 for strikes
David Salgueiro was hit by a pitch and stole a base

 

Game 1
Edmonton 5 at Okotoks 2

The Edmonton Prospects won game one 5-2 over the Okotoks Dawgs in front of 3,240 fans at Seaman Stadium.

Mason Swegarden, the Mayville State University product, went the distance for the Dawgs. 
Swegarden allowed three earned runs, six hits and struck out eight batters in the loss.

Prospects starter Edgar Barclay held the Dawgs to one run and seven hits while striking out 11 through seven innings to pick up the win.

Edmonton’s four run fifth inning was the difference in the game.


Highlights - Edmonton
Anthony Cusati opened the scoring with a home run in the top of the third inning.
Chase Morris pitched 2.2 innings and Josh Sieglitz recorded the save.

Highlights - Okotoks
Mason Swegarden threw 126 pitches including 97 strikes
Dawgs out hit Edmonton 10-6 and left 14 men on base
