WMBL Game Highlights - Saturday July 21

Doubleheader

Yorkton at Melville
The Yorkton Cardinals swept the Melville Millionaires in this long-standing Saskatchewan sports rivalry.

 

Game 1: Yorkton 10 at Melville 9
Melville jumped out to an early 6-0 lead but could not hold on as the Yorkton Cardinals completed the comeback with three runs in the top of the seventh to win 10-9.

Matt Zanutta faced four batters in late innings to pick up his second win of 2018.  Melville reliever Joey Walls was tagged with the loss.

Jared McDonald had a hit, scored 3 runs and a stolen base
Jack Swisher reached base 3 times with 2 hits and a walk.

Ryan Tackett contributed 3 hits, a run and a walk

 

Game 2: Yorkton 7 at Melville 2
Yorkton banged out 10 hits on the way to a 7-2 win over Melville. With the sweep of the Money Men Yorkton improved to 10-29. The pair of losses dropped Melville to 11-29.

Riley Jepson, Jack Swisher and Logan Zozaya led the Cardinals with two hits each.

Parker Hubbard, the lefty from Tennessee earned his second win of the season with a five inning, three hit performance. Zach Diaz, from Paris Junior College, gave up five runs over four innings in the loss.

Jayse Wilson smacked a triple and drove in 4 runs
The Cards left seven runners on base

Doubleheader
Weyburn at Moose Jaw

The Weyburn Beavers and Moose Jaw Miller Express split a double header at Ross Wells Park Saturday night. Each game was seven innings.

Game 1: Weyburn 8 at Moose Jaw 4
In game 1 of the twin bill, Weyburn doubled up the Miller Express 8-4 in front of 276 Moose Jaw fans. Left fielder Wade Weinburger led the Weyburn hit parade with four hits and three runs scored. 

Weyburn starter Chase Thometz, a senior the University of Jamestown, picked up his third win after a six-inning performance where he gave up two earned runs on six hits while adding two strikeouts. Ryder Yakel took the loss after pitching 5 innings.

With two hits Corey Wheaton’s batting average increased to .363
Eric Evans made his 20th game appearance and pitched a perfect final inning

Highlights - Moose Jaw
Scott Platt had 2 hits including his 7th double of the year.
Eric Marriott stole his 13th base

 

 

Game 2: Weyburn 2 at Moose Jaw 3
In game two Moose Jaw extracted some revenge with a 3-2 win over Weyburn. With two out in the bottom of the ninth, Markus Gregson had a clutch single to score Geordie McDougall for the Moose Jaw victory.

Scott Platt hit his eighth double of 2018 to lead Moose Jaw to its 20th win of the season. With the loss, the Eastern Division leading Weyburn Beavers dropped to 31-10.

Miller Express reliever Logan Hofmann had three scoreless innings which allowed him to pick up his second win of the year. Chandler Casey, who took the loss, pitched 3.1 inning of relief for the Beavers.

Edmonton 1 at Okotoks 10
The Okotoks Dawgs overpowered the Edmonton Prospects 10-1 on the way to their fourth consecutive win. William Hollis brought the Seaman Stadium crowd of 3,843to its feet with his third home run of the season.

Eric Crain, the junior from Longwood University, had two of the Prospects four hits.
Dawgs starter Cody Ebert was the winning pitcher while Taran Oultan took the loss.

 

Highlights - Edmonton
Nick Spillman is hitting .372
Reliever Drew Scott struck out 2 batters in his inning of work

Highlights - Okotoks
8-2 in their last 10 games
Dawgs pitchers struck out 9 batters

 

Fort McMurray 9 at Lethbridge 11
The Lethbridge Bulls improved their playoff chances with a 11-9 come from behind victory over Fort McMurray. Trailing 6-0 after two innings the Bulls charged back with 11 runs on 16 hits.

Lethbridge, 18-23, now sports a three-game lead over Fort McMurray, 15-26, for the final playoff position in the Western Division.

Jesse Hilyard, making his third start was the pitcher of record for Lethbridge. Talon Derrick added the save.

Liam Rihela had a triple and a home run
Padraic Walsh was the losing pitcher

Dustin Bran hit 2 doubles and drove in 3 runs.


 

Medicine Hat 10 at Brooks 5
With their 10-5 win in Brooks, Medicine Hat continues to be the hottest team in the WMBL as they now have a league best 32 victories.

Carson Johnson was a human highlight reel for the Mavericks. The sophomore from Conners State College had three hits, three walks and scored five runs. 
Conner Morro had two hits and two RBI in a losing cause.

Junior Pimentel got the win for Medicine Hat while Felix Pena took the Bomber’s loss.
