WMBL Game Highlights - Friday July 20

Okotoks 9 at Swift Current 6

After defeating the Swift Current 57s, 9-6, the Okotoks Dawgs finished their Saskatchewan road trip with a 3-5 record.

Okotoks had four home runs but Nate Dechaine was the top Dawg in the game.  The third baseman from Morningside College picked up three hits including two home and three RBI. Swift Current catcher Ben Komonosky countered with two home runs and four RBI.

Dawgs starter Mason Swegarden ran his record to 6-0 with the win. Columbia College’s Craig Smith inched closer to tying the WMBL record as he earned his 13th save of 2018.  Jack Ferguson took the loss for Swift Current.

Melville 2 at Weyburn 15
The Weyburn Beavers earned their 30 win of the season with a 15-2 thumping of the Melville Millionaires.  312 fans at Tom Laing Park watched as the Beavers cranked out 18 hits including two doubles and four home runs.

Anthony Galindo led Weyburn with three hits and a run scored. Edarian Williams had two of Melville’s six hits.

The Money Men sent Landen DeLozier to the mound to start the game. The Denver, CO product was tagged with the defeat after throwing 4.2 innings. The win went to Conner DiNaro who pitched eight innings of six hit, two run ball. The junior from Mayville State University also had nine strikeouts and did not walk a batter on the way to his second win of 2018.

Moose Jaw 9 at Yorkton 3
The Yorkton Cardinals fell 9-3 to the visiting Moose Jaw Miller Express.  The loss was the ninth consecutive for Yorkton who fell to 8-29. Moose Jaw improved their overall record to 19-20. 

The Moose Jaw offensive explosion consisted of 16 hits including six doubles, two home runs and three walks. Scott Platt led the charge for Moose Jaw with three hits, a run scored and a RBI.  Ryne Niemi and Dillon Champagne contributed two hits each for Yorkton.

Brooks 1 at Medicine Hat 9
The 1,158 fans at Athletic Field went home happy as the Medicine Hat Mavericks pounded the Brooks Bombers 9-1.

Jordan Dray, the sophomore from UBC, made the most of his time in the batters box coming up with two hits and four RBI for the Mavericks. Sal Rodriquez also had a good night for Medicine Hat as he had two hits, two walks and two runs scored. Outfielder Damian Rodriguez led the Bombers with two hits.

Juan Carreon suffered the loss after lasting just three innings for the Bombers. The Mavericks coaching staff sent Matt Brooks out to start the game and he did not disappoint. The right hander from Abbottstown, Pennsylvania earned his fourth win of the season after allowing one run on five hits over seven innings.

Fort McMurray 6 vs Lethbridge 7
This game had playoff implications as the Bulls and Giants battle for the final post season spot in the Western Division. With their 7-6 win Lethbridge now has a two game cushion over Fort McMurray for fourth place.

Giants outfielder John Loschiavo reached base four times on two walks and two hits. He also had two RBI. Dustin Braun hit two home runs and drove in three runs in the Bulls victory. Kaleb Warden also went yard for Lethbridge.

Reliever Seth Spangler earned the Lethbridge win and Chris Stodolka grabbed the save while Giant starter Chris Mercure took the loss. Mercure made his fifth start and threw seven complete innings.

Both teams are 5-5 in their last 10 games.
