WMBL Game Recaps - Saturday, July 14

Doubleheader
Game 1:
Medicine Hat 3 at Fort McMurray 7 (7 innings)

In the first game of the twin bill, Fort McMurray jumped out to a 4-0 lead and hung on to defeat the WMBL’s top Team 7-4.

Nic Cardinal went the distance for his fourth win of the season. The sophomore from the Prairie Baseball Academy gave up three runs on six hits and two walks.

Conner Green started for Medicine Hat and lasted three innings as he allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks.

Giant catcher Jonathan Lindau contributed to the Fort McMurray win with two hits, a walk and three RBI. Sal Rodriquez homered and had 2 RBI for the Mavericks

Game 2
Fort McMurray 2 at Medicine Hat 10 (7 innings)

 

The Mavericks scored six runs in the second inning and hammered out 12 hits in their 10-2 win in game two of the double header. With the win, Medicine Hat improved their league leading record to 28-6.

Brandon Greene had three hits including two doubles for Fort McMurray. Zack Gray countered with 3 hits and 3 RBI in the game.

Matt Brooks made his fourth start and earned his third win after tossing seven innings for the Mavericks. Yorkton starter Padraic Walsh was the losing pitcher.

Moose Jaw 5 at Lethbridge 9
Lethbridge returned to their winning ways with a 9-5 win over Moose Jaw at Spitz Stadium.
The Bulls used a four run eighth inning to put away the Miller Express.

Blake MacDonald had a hot night at the plate contributing three hits, a hit by pitch and a RBI for the Bulls. Moose Jaw’s Blake Gallagher had a pair of hits a walk and a RBI in defeat.

Talon Derrick picked up his fourth win of the year while the Moose Jaw loss went to reliever  Logan Hofmann.

Regina 6 at Melville 5
Regina newcomer Jahshua Jones made his WMBL debut a memorable one. With the Red Sox trailing Melville 5-4 Jones smacked a two-run home run to put the visitors ahead for good. The win was the 21st of the season for the Queen City kids.

Edarian Williams had a hit, a run and a RBI for the Miller Express.

Dylan Bells started for Regina and pitched 5.2 innings before handing the ball to Anthony Race who tossed 2.1 shutout innings for the win. Sam Cottingham-Beard got the save, his fourth of  2018.

David Flores, a native of El Paso, Texas was on the hook for the loss.

Yorkton 5 at Okotoks 8
Okotoks got a pair of doubles from Nate Dechaine in their 8-5 win over the visiting Yorkton Cardinals. The win extended the Dawgs winning streak to eight games.

Reliever Jesse Coleman pitch a shutout 8th inning for his second victory of the year. Craig Smith picked up his eighth save. Cardinal starter Hunter Sanford went seven plus innings in the loss. 

Yorkton centre fielder Griffey Halle reached base three times against the Dawgs. Halle, a junior from Western Oregon had a triple, a walk and two RBI.

Brooks 0 at Edmonton 2
Edmonton starter Rich Walker continues to dominate WMBL hitters. Walker pitched a two hit shutout in the Prospects 2-0 win over Brooks. The Mesa Community College product walked two and struck out six to earn his fourth win of the season. Earlier this year Walker threw the first perfect game in WMBL history.

Collin Thomas also had a very good start for Brooks. Thomas had a complete game with two runs on eight hits and three walks. He also struck out three.

Prospect second baseman Tony Olson had two hits including a double and two walks in the contest. Jakob Shields reached base twice in the game for the Bombers. He had a hit and a walk in the loss.

With the loss now 10-24 on the season
