WMBL Game Recaps - Friday July 13

Swift Current 7 at Brooks 3

It was the battle of the big bats in Brook on Friday night. Riley MacDonald and Bo McClintock did not disappoint as they both doubled and had home run shots in the 57s 7-3 win over Brooks.

 

MacDonald playing in his final WMBL game leaves with a league record 20 home runs and 48 RBI. On the season, McClintock now has 14 homers and 37 RBI.  Swift Current also got home runs from Blake Adams and Ethan Hunter. 

 

Jack Ferguson was the Swift Current’s winning pitcher while Enid, Ok native Jonny Chavez took the loss for Brooks.

Ruben Rodriquez had a double, a walk and 2 RBI in his second game with the 57s

The Swift Current pitchers registered 13 strikeouts

Lethbridge 6 at Okotoks 14

The Okotoks Dawgs extended their winning streak to seven games as they put the bite on the Lethbridge Bulls 14-6. With the win the Dawgs now sport a record of 22-10 and remain second best in the Western Division. Lethbridge now have a 13-21 mark and hold down the final playoff spot.  

 

In the home half of the third inning Nate Dechaine opened the scoring with a grand slam to give the Dawgs a lead they would not relinquish. The Bulls made the game close with 

seventh inning home runs from Carter Witbeck and Hank Forrest. 

 

Bryce Oriold-Fraser started for the Bulls and took the loss after tossing 5.1 innings. The win went to Okotoks starter Carter Robinson. The freshman from Mesa Junior College earned his third win after pitching seven innings and striking out seven.

Centre fielder Collin Ridout homered and had 3 RBI

 

 

Weyburn 10 at Moose Jaw 3

Weyburn designated hitter Corey Harrell belted out four hits including a double and home run in the Beavers 10-3 win over Moose Jaw. With the road win, the Eastern Division leading Beavers are now 25-8 while the Miller Express fell to 17-16.  

 

On the night, Cory Ewald drove in three runs and scored a run on two hits. The Moose Jaw offensive highlights came off the bat of centre fielder Ty Schindel who had three hits and two RBI. 

 

Daniel Crooks started for Weyburn and lasted six innings. In the seventh inning Dalton Ross came in and pitched a scoreless frame for the win. Miller Express reliever Matt Perry was tagged with the loss.

Fort McMurray 5 at Medicine Hat 8

The WMBL’s top team, the Medicine Hat Mavericks, continued their winning ways with an 8-5 win over the visiting Fort McMurray Giants. 

 

885 fans filled Athletic Park to watch the Mavericks pick up their league leading 27thvictory. The Giants, who are in a battle for the final Western Division playoff spot, dropped to 12-22. 

 

Offensively Colton Wright led the Mavericks with three hits and three RBI while Johnathan Lindau had a pair of hits and a RBI for the Giants.  

 

Jumpei Akanuma, the right hander from Kyota, Japan pitched seven strong innings to pick up his fifth win of the year. Akanuma gave up two earned runs on six hits and a walk. He also struck out seven. Giant reliever Ryan Dunn, making his 14thappearance, took the loss.

Liam Rihela had a double and 2 RBI
