WMBL Game Recap – Saturday, June 9

Ft. McMurray 3 at Edmonton 6
The Edmonton Prospects defeated the visiting Fort McMurray 6-3 at ReMax Field.  The victory vaulted Edmonton to a 5-2 record. The Giants fell to 3-4. 

Edmonton jumped out to an early 4-0 lead which helped Prospect starter Taran Oulton pick up his second win of the season. Oulton tossed five innings with three hits and two walks while striking out two of the 18 Giant batters he faced.  Losing pitcher David Craft lasted three innings before the Giants bullpen took over.

UBC product Nick Spillman helped the Edmonton offence with two hits and a walk . He also scored a run. The Giants countered with outfielder Mike Bowes who chipped in with two hits and a RBI.

Melville 7 at Weyburn 8
The Weyburn Beavers thrilled the 305 fans at Tom Laing Park with a come from behind 8-7 victory over Melville. The Beavers overcame five errors and a 7-2 deficit with a six run seventh inning rally.

Brodie Stairs came on in relief of Weyburn starter Cam Williams in the seventh inning to pick up his second win of the season. Eric Evans earned the save, his second of the year. Ricky Hockett was tagged with the loss for the Millionaires.

Melville shortstop Kole Kaler led all hitters with a walk and three hits including a double. He also stole two bases.  Eric Morales helped the Beavers with two hits and two runs scored.

With the win Weyburn is now 6-0 while Melville dropped to .500 with a 3-3 record.

Moose Jaw 4 at Medicine Hat 14
Medicine Hat did not let a rain delay dampen their bats as they pounded out 13 hits in their 14-4 victory over Moose Jaw.

Starter Jared Libke was lights out for the Mavericks pitching six scoreless allowing just two hits while striking out eight batters. Ryder Yakel started for Moose Jaw but was roughed up for eight runs in 4.1 innings.

Maverick DH Zach Gray was sensational at the plate. He had a home run, three doubles and four RBI on the night. Adam Cook registered two hits and a RBI for the Miller Express.

Moose Jaw is now 6-2 and have lost their last two games after winning their first six games.
On the flip side, the Mavericks started the season 0-2 and have rebounded to win their last five games.

Regina 10 at Yorkton 1

The Regina Red Sox got an outstanding performance from starter Evan Rogers in their 10-1 win over Yorkton at Jubilee Park. The senior from Texas A&M Texarkana dominated Cardinal batters over the seven innings he pitched, allowing only three hits while striking out six.

Riley Hickerson led the Red Sox offence with a double, triple, two RBI and two runs scored. The visiting Red Sox also had seven different hitters register at least one RBI. Titus Jones continues to be an offensive force as he reached base twice for the Cards.

Regina finished the game with 13 hits and three stolen bases. Yorkton had one run on five hits. The Cardinals also committed three errors.

Okotoks 8 at Lethbridge 5

510 fans at Spitz stadium watched as the visiting Okotoks Dawgs improved their season record to 5-2 with an 8-5 win over Lethbridge. With the loss the Bulls now sit at 1-7. It was also the second consecutive night the Dawgs beat the Bulls.

It was an entertaining affair as both teams combined for 25 hits. Blake MacDonald had a hot bat as he had four hits including a double and a home run in a losing cause. He also registered three RBI.

Dawgs starter Mason Swegarden went six innings to grab his second win of the season. Closer Jordan Pepper picked up his first save of 2018. Bulls starter Andrew Grieder took the loss.
