Baseball is Back
“Put me in coach, I'm ready to play today…Look at me, I can be centerfield.”
John Fogerty - Centerfield
For most of us, baseball never really ends. However, I think every baseball fan gets a special feeling in February when Major League baseball players report to Florida and Arizona for spring training.
The history of spring training dates back to the late 19th century. Back then, its main
purpose was to show off the game during barnstorming tours in the South United States.
Historians highlight games held in New Orleans between the Cincinnati Red Stockings and the Chicago White Stockings in 1870 as the beginning of spring training. By 1910 teams had established their own spring training sites.
While the professionals get ready to start their season in February, teams in the Western Major Baseball League (WMBL), Canada’s pre-eminent summer collegiate baseball league, will take to the field in May.
The WMBL boasts a long-standing tradition of creating a showcase for top Canadian professional and college prospects. The league also offers American college players an opportunity to hone their skills in front of enthusiastic baseball fans throughout the Prairies.
Here are a few important dates to add to your baseball calendar.
