When the third inning concluded in Thursday night’s matchup between the Regina Red Sox and the Weyburn Beavers, fans at Currie Field were ready to pack their bags and head on home.
The Red Sox were down by six runs heading into the fourth, and continued to trail the Beavers throughout the game until the last two innings. The Red and White were down 10-6, but scored three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth, which allowed them to comeback and send the ball game into extra innings tied, 10-10.
Six Red Sox pitchers took the mound against the Beavers, but it was shortstop Chase Benfield that stole the show late-game as the seventh pitcher. The Red Sox senior started his new position in the top of the tenth and pitched three innings, allowed three hits, and struck out two.
Pier-Olivier Dostaler’s drive to right field scored Benfield in the bottom of the 13th that capped off the exciting Red Sox comeback with an 11-10 win.
Benfield finished with his first win of the season on the pitcher’s mound. He also went 3-for-7 at the plate with three runs and an RBI.
The Red Sox next home game is this Sunday against the Saskatoon Yellow Jackets. Game start will be at 2:05 p.m.
