Okotoks, AB... People counted out the Okotoks Dawgs (2-2) when they started the season 2-9, and also when they went down by two games in the playoffs to the Lethbridge Bulls just two days ago (2-2).
But this team showed battle, and in another do-or-die game at Seaman Stadium, the Dawgs were able to score three runs late in the game and claim a huge 4-2 win over the No. 1 seeded Bulls and force a fifth game.
In the bottom of the eighth, with two outs and runners on second and third, Jerod Bartnik (University of British Columbia) smacked a huge double between centre and right field to break a 2-2 deadlock and put the Dawgs ahead 4-2. Shawn Andersen (Douglas College), who came into the game in relief for starter Jon Richards (Sonoma State University), had the game of his Dawgs career, allowing just one hit across five scoreless inning while fanning five batters. Andersen was able to lock up the Dawgs win with the crowd of 1963 behind him all game.
Jordan Peterson (Chandler Gilbert Community College) continued his strong post-season knocking in his third RBI in four games while going 1-2 with a steal. Connor Crane (Lamar Community College), who entered the game hitting just .091 with one hit, came up huge, going 2-2 with a monster solo home run in the fourth inning. Bartnik finished 1-3 with his aforementioned two-run double.
Dawgs' starter Jon Richards allowed two runs over four innings while striking out five and was spelled by Andersen for the start of the fifth. The hit battle finished 6-6, and Lethbridge's three errors (to Okotoks' one) were no help for the Bulls.
Tomorrow, the pivotal and deciding game five will be played at Spitz Stadium in Lethbridge in a 7 P.M. start, which can again be seen broadcasted on Shaw TV (Channel 10, Channel 303 for HD, and a live stream online). The winner will face the Medicine Hat Mavericks, the second place team in the West Division, in the Western Finals starting on Thursday, August 7th.
