Okotoks, AB...It took some extra inning magic, but the Okotoks Dawgs (16-15) were able to knock off the hottest team in the WMBL, the Lethbridge Bulls (22-10) by a score of 8-7.
The Dawgs claimed victory on a walk-off hit by Brendan Rose (University of British Columbia). Rose floated a single over the second baseman’s head to score Matt Lloyd (Dawgs Academy) from second base. The two Junior Dawg alumni were the spark the Dawgs needed.
Rose was 2-5 with two RBIs and had a huge throw from right field to gun a runner out at home earlier in the game. Connor Crane (Lamar CC), Scott Hoyt (Colorado State – Pueblo), Ross Barker (Western Texas College), Taylor Fish (University of Nebraska) and Mark Riendeau (Louisiana College) all had two hits. Hoyt also had three RBIs and double, which he ranks second in the league with 14.
The Dawgs were leading 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth when Travis Steinke hit a solo home run to tie it up. Travis McDonald (University of Arkansas – Little Rock) allowed the homer, but it was his only blemish. He threw four innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts.
The Bulls were 9-1 in their last 10 games and had won five straight coming into tonight until the Dawgs stopped them in their path. Starting Monday, the Dawgs go on the road for five games in Weyburn (two), Regina (two) and Medicine Hat (one).
