WMBL Week 5 - Pitcher and Player of the Week for June 27-July 3, 2014

WMBL Pitcher of the Week is Blake Mitchell of the Edmonton Prospects

It has been a couple years since the Edmonton Prospects had a Western Major Baseball League (WMBL) pitcher of the week.  Now the Prospects have had two pitchers of the week.  Earlier this season Curtis Taylor earned the award and now he is joined by teammate Blake Mitchell.

Mitchell, a native of Yorba Linda, California, recently completed his sophomore season with Cypress Community College in California.   In two seasons at Cypress, the underutilized Mitchell logged less than 14 innings in relief.  Joining the Edmonton Prospects has allowed Mitchell to flourish in a starting role where he has been the leader of the Edmonton staff.

When asked why Mitchell chose Edmonton for his summer college program, he indicated that, “my teammate Trevor Meleski was going there to play and thought it would be a good experience for me to go as well.  It was also an opportunity to come to Canada to play, and I had never been to the country before.  To play in a Minor League stadium and receive first class treatment in Edmonton has been more than expected.”

Travelling to Canada to play has opened up another door for Mitchell as he is poised to finish his schooling at Northwest Nazarene University, located in Boise, ID.  Head coach Rocke Musgraves came up early in the season to scout a number of junior college players and Mitchell caught his eye during a performance against Okatoks.     It was after that outing that Musgraves offered Mitchell a scholarship for him to continue his baseball career while receiving significant educational funding.

For the week, Mitchell was given the ball July 1st in front of 6,417 home supporters in Edmonton.  Mitchell did not disappoint and went the distance in the Canada Day Classic throwing 9 shutout innings en route to a 4-0 victory over the Regina Red Sox.  Pounding the zone with first pitch strikes, Mitchell threw 111 pitches of which 70 were for strikes, allowing four hits, walking two and striking out 6 batters for his first complete game victory.  It was also Mitchell’s first win in six starts and he lowered his season ERA to 2.13.

Mitchell follows Lethbridge Bull’s Scott Cone and Moose Jaw Miller Express’ Terry McNabb, Edmonton’s Curtis Taylor and Melville’s Steven Brunnell as previous winners of the weekly award.

Congratulations Blake on becoming the Pitcher of the Week

WMBL Player of the Week from the Regina Red Sox  - Brian Frazier

Brian Frazier is player of the week in the WMBL for the week June 27-July 3.
In 5 games Brian had 9 hits in 18AB, 2 HRs 9 RBI, 7 runs scored, 4 bb. His 2 home runs were 3 run and a Grand Slam. He raised his batting average from .191 to .256 in the week.

The 6-4, 250 lb. Frazier a senior from Texas A&M Kingsville has graduated with a Sports Business degree and a minor in Business Administration.  In his 2014 college season he hit .358 with 5 HR and 30 RBI in 44 games. The native of Kingwood, Texas has played first base and DH so far this season for the Red Sox.

He’s graduated with a Sport Business degree and a minor in business admin. When asked why he came to the to the WMBL, his passion for baseball came through, he’s here to extend his baseball career and possibly get a pro shot. The Regina Red Sox’s team was that opportunity for him and teammate pitcher Denver Diefenbach. He loves the league and the Red Sox. Every game is competitive there are no nights off.  It has been a great experience playing in Canada except for to much rain. The 2014 season has seen a possible record number of games postponed and rescheduled due to rain.

The WMBL would like to congratulate Brian Frazier, and hope that he does get to experience a Prairie summer in Canada – the sun will come out.
