For Immediate Release

Week 2 (June 6-12, 2014)  - The WMBL Announces the Pitcher and Player of the Week

Pitcher of the Week – Scott Cone of the Lethbridge Bulls

Scott Cone is 8762 miles or 14,101 km from his home in Glenwood, New South Wales, Australia, but because of baseball and connections from his school at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas, Cone is a very popular player with the Lethbridge Bulls this summer.  He will be returning to West Texas in the fall to complete his degree following which he will travel home to Australia to begin his career.

Cone has impressed all who have watched him pitch to start his 2014 WMBL summer.  He has thrown 20 2/3 scoreless innings, which equates of course to a 0.00 ERA.  He has a record of 2-0 including a complete game 3-0 shut out of the Regina Red Sox this past Thursday.

He brings a good work ethic to the ballpark and thus will be relied on to be one of the leaders of the pitching staff for the Lethbridge Bulls this summer.  He has also found time to be involved in some Little League camps in the area and was a magnet for many of the local kids who attended the camps.

This is Scott's second visit to Canada. His first was as a participant for Team Australia at the World Junior Baseball Championship in Thunder Bay back in 2010. In another unique situation, Scott found his girlfriend when he was at West Texas as well. She is also a Canadian and hails from Kelowna, BC!

Congratulations Scott on being nominated and chosen as the WMBL Pitcher of the Week  for June 6-12, 2014.

Player of the Week  - Derek Cornell of the Moose Jaw Miller Express

Derek, a 21-year-old Balwin, Missouri product is a redshirt sophomore the perennial Division 2 powerhouse University of Central Missouri.

For the week of June 6-12, 2014 Derek had a .450 batting average that included games of 2-5 against Edmonton, 4-5 and 3-5 against Okotoks. He slugged an impressive .950 for the week that included 3 doubles, 2 triples, and a home run. His best game came against Okotoks on Wednesday, June 11 where he drove in 4, scored 3, stole 2, and added a double and 2 triples. All told he scored 6 runs, drove in 7, and stole 3 bases for the week. He was the starting 2nd baseman for all 4 of the Millers games during the week and is looked to as a spark plug atop the batting order.

This is Derek's first year with the Miller Express and he is quickly making a name for him self as a player the fans enjoy coming out to see. At Central Missouri, he is a marketing major with a 3.0 GPA and earned 2013-2014 academic honor roll status during his past season of competition. Here in the friendly city he is currently being hosted with Doug and Leslie Sheppard, long time partners with the Miller Express and has been a model billet as well as teammate within the clubhouse.

Congratulations Derek on being nominated and chosen as the WMBL Player of the Week for June 6-12, 2014.
