The two best teams in the regular season in the Western Major Baseball League faced off in game one of the Western Final in Medicine Hat. The Dawgs came out early, scoring a run in the first inning and were leading 2-1 after six innings, but then fell by a final score of 5-2.
Tom Zarosinski (George Fox University) threw 6 1/3 innings of stifling baseball. He struck out five Mavericks while only giving up four hits and two runs. The bullpen have been a strong suit of the team all summer long, but tonight they were unable to come through in the clutch, giving up three runs in 1 2/3 innings of work.
Zac Asman (Northern Kentucky University) had a strong night, going 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored. Thomas Rodrigues (Niagara University) also pitched in with a 1-for-3 night including a run scored. They were the only two batters to hit for extra bases with a double apiece in the first inning to give the Dawgs the early lead.
These two teams will be back in action tomorrow at Jeffries Park at 7:05pm for game two of the five game series. Aaron Conyers (York College) will get the start, looking to build on his strong start in game three in the first round.
