The Okotoks Dawgs (29-13) took on their division rival Medicine Hat Mavericks (37-7) in the continuation of a rain out game back on July 17th. The game resumed in the sixth inning with a player on first and two out. The pitchers on both sides dominated the game and were the key pieces to the game. There was no score going into the bottom of the 11th, but a single and error put a player on second and a bloop single gave the Mavericks their first walk off win versus the Dawgs.
For the third straight game, the Dawgs and Mavericks went into extra innings, with this being the first additional inning win for Medicine Hat against the Dawgs. Chris Villalobos (Georgetown College) started the game earlier this month, but Codi Scanlon (Gonzaga University) pitched when they resumed today and picked up right where Villalobos left off. Scanlon threw 5 2/3 innings, really keeping the Mavs bats quiet until the 11th.
Thomas Rodrigues (Niagara University) continued to be the hottest hitter for the Dawgs as he went 2-for-2 today. Zac Asman (Northern Kentucky University) went 1-for-1 with a double and a stolen base. Other then those two, the offense couldn’t piece anything together and never even saw a runner at third base.
The Dawgs and Mavericks are getting ready to face off again in a seven-inning game. Chris Villalobos will take the ball and look to break the Mavericks 20-0 record at home this season.
In game two of the day, the Okotoks Dawgs (30-13) faced off against the Medicine Hat Mavericks (37-7) for the second and it was a battle right down to the last pitch. The Mavericks had a perfect record of 20-0 at home coming in to the seven-inning game, but the Dawgs spoiled the party, winning by a final of 5-4.
Ryan Serrato (Georgetown College) had the big hit, getting a two RBI double to take the lead. Sean Kettering (Otterbein University) also had a good game, going 1-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored.
Chris Villalobos (Georgetown College) got the start and threw four innings giving up four runs but only two of those were earned. Pete Gaustad (Minnesota State College) got the win, throwing two innings giving up no hits. Then Dominic Porretta (Otterbein University) got the save, throwing a shut out seventh inning.
The Dawgs will be back in action tomorrow at home versus the Lethbridge Bulls. Game time is 7:05pm at Seaman Stadium. It is the final game of the regular season. The Bulls and Dawgs then meet in the playoffs later on in the week.
