The Okotoks Dawgs (29-11) faced the Moose Jaw Miller Express (19-24) in a battle of the two highest-ranked offenses in the Western Major Baseball League. The Dawgs showed tonight why their offense is ranked number one, with a dominating 10-4 victory.
Hayden Cleveland (Franklin College) took the ball looking for his league-tying seventh win of the summer and was rewarded with the victory. He threw 6 2/3 innings of excellent baseball. He gave up only three runs, two of them earned with only nine hits and one strikeout. Cody Artalejo (Northeastern Junior College) and Jamie Wilson (Auckland University) pitched in relief, giving up one unearned run in 2 1/3 innings of three hit baseball.
The Dawgs ran their way to an early lead, using their speed to take the extra base, as well as swipe the open base. The team had a total of five stolen bases, with two of them coming from Zac Asman (Northern Kentucky University). Asman went 1-for-3, but used his speed to score three runs. James Stewart (UBC) went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Cade Gotta stayed hot, going 2-for-4 and kept innings going for the top of the order.
Tonight was an extremely special night, as it was the 100th win for AJ Fystro as the Head Coach of the Dawgs team. The Dawgs and Miller Express will be back in action tomorrow at 7:05pm at Seaman Stadium. It is John Barlow Saskatchewan Night/ Beer Appreciation Night at the park.
