WMBL Alumni: Andrelton Simmons Impressing

04/06/2018 1:27 PM -

Since the day Los Angeles Angels shortstop, Andrelton Simmons broke into the MLB in 2012 with the Atlanta Braves, he has done nothing but impress.
The 3-time Gold Glove Award winner is not only one of the league’s top defensive shortstop right now, but is quietly itching his way into the conversation as one of the best defensive shortstops in baseball history.
Putting up a whopping 7.1 WAR in 2017, good enough for 8th in the Major Leagues, the Curacao native is continuing his dominance again this 2018 MLB season.
Before his stardom, Simmons made a pit stop in the Western Major Baseball League located in Western Canada with the Yorkton Cardinals in 2009. Putting together an impressive season in the Cards organization with defensive gem after defensive gem, and hit after hit, (37 to be exact) Simmons was drafted by the Atlanta Braves a year later in the 2nd round of the MLB June Amateur Draft out of Western Oklahoma State College.
Known for his defensive abilities, Simmons is a human highlight reel. Dropping jaws on a regular basis, his glove work is very impressive and something you need to see to believe.
With many big names coming out of the WMBL, Simmons puts himself atop that list as one of the premier alumni, next to current Toronto Blue Jays Relief Pitcher, John Axford who has put together many successful seasons in the MLB and continues to do so.
The WMBL is known to produce greatly talented players and prepare them in their future endeavours of becoming a professional baseball player.  Other names that come to mind when speaking of great alumni are Andrew Albers, Marco Gonzales, Dan Runzler, Kody Rock, and Shawn Wooten to name a few.
With the 2018 WMBL season right around the corner, who knows who will be the next great WMBL alumni. You’ll have to come see for yourself. Be sure to head to your nearest ballpark to catch the action.
